How to Make a Grand Piano With Legos

If you are a music lovers and Lego enthusiast, you might want to construct Lego versions of musical instruments. One fun and challenging project is a Lego grand piano, which can serve as a decoration in your Lego building or church. Once your grand piano is completed, you can seat a Lego mini-figure at the piano to play.

Things You'll Need

  • Lego base pieces
  • Smooth-topped white Lego base piece
  • Lego bricks
  • Lego detail pieces
  • Scotch tape
  • Small piece of metal or wood

Instructions

    • 1

Build the base of the piano. Lay flat base pieces side-by-side to create a single layer in the shape of the piano base. If you want your grand piano to be the correct size for a mini-figure pianist, your base layer should be about eight circles wide at the keyboard end, about four circles wide at the back end, and about eight circles long.

    • 2

Connect these pieces with an additional, smaller layer of base pieces. Over the back half, create a raised area to represent the piano's strings. Cover this area with a layer of flat yellow "grill" pieces, with the grill lines running front-to-back. These pieces will give the illusion of strings inside the piano.

    • 3

Create the keyboard area. Over the front row of circles, place a smooth-topped white piece, leaving an open circle at each end. Directly behind this, place another layer of base pieces one circle deep. Instead of leaving an open circle at each side of the keyboard, place a single Lego stud piece.

    • 4

Create the bulk of the piano's body. Using standard-thickness bricks (or base pieces stacked one on top of the other), surround the strings on the sides and at the back end.

    • 5

Complete the keyboard. In front of the strings, place two flat, one-by-two black pieces with a two-pronged fork extension at the front. Place two flat, one-by-two black pieces with a three-pronged fork extension at the front as well. Alternate these pieces, with the forks extending over the smooth white piece to create the keyboard. Place an additional layer of base pieces over the Lego section of these pieces. Over the two stud pieces, place two single-circle pieces. In front of these (on either side of the keyboard), place a smooth-surfaced detail piece rounding toward the back of the piano. Finally, over the line of circles directly behind the keyboard, place a final smooth-topped base piece.

    • 6

Construct the piano lid. Lay a two-by four base piece directly behind (and flush with) a four-by-six base piece. On the underside, use a two-by-two base piece to connect the two. Place the lid on top of the piano body. On the left of the piano, use a small piece of scotch tape to create a joint, so that the lid will open and close. Use a short piece of metal, a toothpick, or a small stick to prop open the lid.

    • 7

Construct the piano's three legs. For each leg, attach a detail piece, such as a conical piece, to a black cylinder piece. To the other end of the cylinder attach another, smaller detail piece, such as a peg-style piece. Finally, attach the legs to the bottom of the piano.

    • 8

Construct the piano bench. Use a two-by-three base piece for the seat. To the bottom, attach four short cylindrical detail pieces. If you want, you can add a peg-style detail piece to the bottom of each.

    • 9

Construct the pedals. Attach a conical detail piece to the bottom of a one-by-two base piece, then attach a single-circle rectangular base piece to the bottom of the cone. Underneath this, place a one-by-two base piece with a rod extension perpendicular to the front. Attach this assembly to the piano underneath the keyboard.
