How to Start With Mindstorm

Lego Mindstorms are Lego robots that you can build and program to perform different tasks such as walking, bending their arms and picking up objects. Getting started with Mindstorm can be a baffling task. In order to program the robots, you must install the supplied NXT Toolkit software on your computer. It is available for Windows and Mac computers. All programming is done on a computer and then uploaded into your robot on an USB card.

    • 1

Take out your assembly instructions and follow them to build your Mindstorms robot. These instructions vary depending on the robot. Follow them precisely to make sure that you don't make any mistakes.

    • 2

Insert your NXT Toolkit CD into your computer. Run the installation program when it pops up automatically. Install it to the default location.

    • 3

Open the "NXT Toolkit" program. There are several different programming blocks on the left side of the screen, such as "Move," "Bend," "Turn" and many others. Note the "Work Area" pane on the right side of the screen.

    • 4

Click one of the programming blocks and drag it to the ""Work Area." Place it in the "Start" position. For example, click on the "Move" button and drag it to "Start" to open up the programming window for the "Move" option.

    • 5

Use the arrow keys next to the "Duration" window. Set the number of seconds you want the robot to walk. Add more commands, such as "Turn." Set the relevant parameters for each command, such as "Turn 45 degrees Counterclockwise."

Insert your USB card into a USB slot. Select the "Download and Run" button in the bottom right area of your screen. Use the "Browse" menu to find your "USB" flash drive. Save your program here.

Insert the USB card into your robot's USB slot. Turn it on to have it automatically scan the card to find your program. It will run it as programmed.
