How to Build the Burrow in LEGOs

Among the most whimsical of the Lego sets are the Lego Harry Potter construction sets. Although no construction set could ever quite capture the Burrow's slanted, contrary-to-the-laws-of-physics charm, the Lego Harry Potter Burrow set does the best job possible without magic. This set, containing 568 pieces, is among the more complex, but if you stick with it, the payoff is worth the effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the packet of bricks labeled with the number 1, if you have not already done so.

    • 2

Assemble your minifigures. The Lego Burrow comes with minifigures for Harry Potter, Molly Weasley, Arthur Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Fenrir Greyback and Bellatrix Lestrange. For each, attach the torso and arm piece to the leg piece. Then attach the head, followed by the snap-on hair piece. Finally, equip each witch or wizard (except Molly) with his or her wand. The Burrow also comes with an owl and a pig, which do not require assembly.

    • 3

Assemble the brown catapult on the tan base piece. Do not use the catapult to fire pieces at people.

    • 4

Assemble the field. Working upward from the brown octagonal base piece, assemble a second catapult. Add the two large brown plant pieces, and create puddles or watery areas with the blue, smooth-topped pieces. Create the fire in the brush with the yellow cone pieces, topped by the orange flame pieces. These same fiery pieces can be lobbed using the catapult.

    • 5

Assemble the fire pit. Beginning with a rectangular gray four-by-six base piece, assemble the bottom of the pit. Then, assemble the back wall and floor of the pit with the black four-by-eight base piece, and snap the two together. Add the long, tall, sidewall pieces, then construct the roof with a second rectangular gray four-by-six piece. Finally, add the detail pieces.

    • 6

Open the packet of bricks labeled with the number 2, if you have not already done so.

    • 7

Assemble the base of the main Burrow building. Begin with the two large square gray base piece, laid flush, and a large green rectangular piece, with one shorter side pressed against the two gray pieces, at the center. Place the second large rectangular green base piece with its long side against one end of the gray pieces. Create walls between the rooms with the tan and brown standard bricks to hold the base pieces together.

    • 8

Add furniture and appliances. On the gray piece farthest from the green piece, add the kitchen appliances and cupboards. Just on the other side of the center line, add the end table and lamp, as well as the clock. On the green base piece at the end, add the pigsty gates, and place the pig in its sty. Don't forget the broomstick.

    • 9

Build up the walls of the first story. Complete the walls with the remaining tan and brown bricks, making sure to insert the window pieces. Don't forget to put the flowerpots and flowers outside the windows.

    • 10

Build the porch. Add the brown front door where the gray base pieces meet the central green base piece, and add the two tan column pieces at the far corners of the green base. Place the tan arch across these two columns, then create a porch roof between the arch and the main building with the three two-by-eight base brown pieces. Top the roof with the ruddy-brown roof pieces and accent pieces.

    • 11

Add the back of the first story. Attach the large rectangular gray base piece, long side flush with the existing gray floors. Connect this piece to the existing structure with the brown and tan small base pieces and form the beginnings of the table. Place the barrel and storage to one side of this floor, then build up the table itself with the tan and brown bricks. Insert the additional brown chairs to the opposite side from the barrel, and place the food and drink detail pieces on the table.

    • 12

Open the packet of bricks labeled with the number 3, if you have not already done so.

    • 13

Assemble the first floor roof. Build the slanting roof of the first floor on the front and sides with the brown and ruddy-brown roof pieces. Don't forget the shuttered front window. Turning to the back of the Burrow, attach the overhead lighting. You should now have two remaining pieces from packet 3, both large, square gray base pieces.

    • 14

Open the packet of bricks labeled with the number 4, if you have not already done so.

    • 15

Assemble the second story. Using one of the "leftover" gray base pieces as the floor, work upward with the tan and brown bricks to construct walls on three sides. As with the first story, do not forget the window pieces. Inside the second story, create bunk beds with the white and colored pieces. Place the chest and the owl in this room, and hang the picture above the upper bunk.

    • 16

Assemble the third story. Use the second "leftover" gray base piece as the ceiling of the second story and floor of the third. On one side of this, place a third bed, next to a white-brick table, with a lamp. Surround these items with the ruddy-brown roof pieces and windows, with the white-framed quidditch pictures on either side of the lamp.

    • 17

Build the roof of the third story. Use the rectangular gray base piece as the ceiling, then top this with the remaining brown and ruddy-brown roof pieces. Top this with the gray chimney pieces (with red toppers) and the gray roof accent pieces.

    • 18

Attach the second and third stories to the ground floor. Once attached, use the brown crossbeam pieces to give the Burrow its classic "thrown-together-by-magic" look.
