How to Build a LEGO Armored Personnel Carrier

LEGO building pieces are a popular construction toy that can be used to create vehicles, buildings, scale models and other items that are only limited by the builder's imagination. LEGO pieces often are used to construct military vehicles and aircraft, such as tanks, helicopters and armored personnel carriers (APCs). Building such a vehicle requires some creativity and planning, but by following a basic guideline, a builder can create an APC that mimics the look of real vehicles or build an original design.

Things You'll Need

  • Large collection of LEGO pieces, including wheels/treads and armor plating

Instructions

    • 1

Build the basic chassis or wheeled platform that the APC will be designed around. The design of the platform will be based on the type of APC the builder wishes to create; it might be powered by a number of tires, or by tank treads, or some combination of the two (such as a half-track). Make sure that the base of the vehicle is large enough to accommodate the armoring and weaponry while still having ample room in the personnel compartment.

    • 2

Begin to build the sides of the carrier. Many APCs simply are shaped like a large armored box, so the shape of the body doesn't need to be too complex. Use overlapping and interlocking LEGO pieces of differing sizes and shapes to create structural integrity. Builders can choose to leave peepholes in the walls of the APC, or a small hatch on the side for additional access to mini-figures.

    • 3

Build the cabin or cockpit of the APC, which will be inhabited by the driver. Typically, this is located near the front of the vehicle, although occasionally, APC cabins are located in an elevated position above the main troop compartment. Make sure that any windows or view ports are well-protected and small.

    • 4

Build the main entrance to the APC. A typical APC design has a ramp at the rear that can be lowered for swift loading or deployment of personnel. Some APCs use an armored door rather than a ramp. Make sure that the entrance mechanism is secure. Once you have finished this step, you should have an almost fully built vehicle body that only lacks a roof and detailing.

    • 5

Furnish the interior of the APC. Depending on the size of the personnel compartment, you might have room for individual seating; otherwise, bench seats are a must for your LEGO mini-figure personnel. Additional detailing and props can help bring life to the interior. For example, ammo crates, spare weapons, monitors and sensor readouts, handrails, a finished floor and lighting are good details. However, you might wish to avoid excessive detailing in favor of the minimalist design common with military vehicle interiors.

    • 6

Add the LEGO armor plates to the outside of the APC. LEGO plating tends to come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which can change or complement the aesthetic look of the vehicle if used correctly. Build any turrets or mounted weaponry that the APC might contain (for example, many APCs have a mounted machine gun turret on the top). Build a top to enclose the APC, and add any additional armor or exterior detailing such as bumpers, headlights, winches, sensors, gas cans and any other elements. You can paint the APC if it's more than a temporary creation.
