How to Build a LEGO Steampunk Mech

Lego is a brand of building block toy. Most pieces have a stud and a corresponding depression that allows pieces to connect together. Because there are thousands of unique Lego pieces, the connections are endless and you can make practically anything you want, including a steampunk mech. Steampunk is a genre of fantasy in which advanced technology runs on the steam and geared machinery of the 19th century. A "mech" is a robot that is piloted by a person. Making a steampunk mech out of Legos is a creative project that you can customize to your liking.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a 2-by-3 black plate to a 2-by-1 black hinged plate. The 2-by-3 plate is the sole of the mech's foot. Attach two brown downward-sloped bricks to the 2-by-3 plate. Attach a 2-by-1 gridded plate to the front of the 2-by-3 plate. The gridded plate doesn't have studs on top; instead, it has bars in a grid pattern. The gridded plate and brown and black colors add to the steampunk look. Repeat this process to make another foot.

    • 2

Connect the other half of the hinged plate to a 1-by-5 black plate. This is the leg. Add brown and black gridded plates to the leg to add more to the steampunk style. Add a special two-studded roped piece or special gear pieces to the back of the leg, if you have them. The roped piece looks like a cable with two studs on the end. Repeat this process for the other leg.

    • 3

Attach a right-angle holder piece to the top of the leg. The right-angle holder looks like a square plate with two pincher fingers coming off the side at an angle to the plate itself. Connect the handlebar of a handlebar plate to the right-angle holder. The handlebar plate looks like a plate with a handlebar extending from its side. Attach a holder plate to the handle-bar plate. The holder plate, unlike the right-angle holder, has two pincher fingers that extend from the side of the plate in line with the plate itself. This last holder will attach to the mech's torso.

    • 4

Attach two handlebar plates to either end of a 2-by-4 brick. Attach three 1-by-1 round bricks to the bottom of the 2-by-4 bricks. Attach two round stud plates to each of the 1-by-1 round bricks. These round bricks create three guns on your steampunk mech. Attach the holder plates of the legs to the handle-bar plates of the bottom half of the torso of the mech.

    • 5

Attach an angle plate to the 2-by-4 brick. The angle plate has a 2-by-2 grid on top and another 2-by-2 grid at a right angle to the top grid. Attach a 4-by-4 plate to the 2-by-2 grid of the angle plate that resides on the side of the 2-by-4 brick. This 4-by-4 plate creates a platform for your Lego person's seat on the mech.

    • 6

Connect a seat to the center of the 4-by-4 plate. Seat your Lego person on it. Connect two levers in front of the seat for your Lego person to hold. Connect a 1-by-1 round brick to the back row of the 4-by-4 plate. Stack two more 1-by-1 round bricks on the first. This creates a chimney stack for the mech. Connect more gridded bricks, rope pieces and handlebar pieces to the platform to polish off the steampunk look.
