LEGO Theater Instructions

LEGO construction is an excellent way to develop and express creativity. Among the most engrossing of LEGO projects are those that involve architecture. These require a large amount of building blocks and take a fair amount of time. But working from a basic guideline, LEGO architects can create entire buildings with completely customized features, themes and details. An ambitious LEGO enthusiast can design and create a large building such as a theater using a bit of planning and creativity.

Things You'll Need

  • LEGO building blocks
  • LEGO mini-figures (optional)
  • Miniature projector or laptop/TV screen (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Construct the floor or base of the theater. LEGO buildings tend to be more stable when they have been built on top of a large flat piece of LEGO surface, such as a LEGO table. Reinforce the floor and define the edges of the building by building up one layer of blocks where the walls will be. Make sure to leave enough room for audience seating and a separate partition for the stage or screen (if your theater is a cinema).

    • 2

Build the back wall of the theater, where the stage or screen will be located. (You may choose to omit this step if you plan to use a laptop or TV screen for a cinema.) Make the wall as tall or wide as desired for the size of the area that will be viewed by the LEGO "audience". Build a raised platform protruding forward into the building from the back wall. If your theater is for dramatic productions, this platform should be expanded and built into a large stage area. Otherwise, this platform need only be large enough to accommodate the base of the screen.

    • 3

Construct a curtain wall at the front of the stage area. If your theater is for plays, build the wall far enough forward to make room for stage wings. Attach a curtain to the front walls if you have the resources. (There are LEGO pulley systems that can be used in conjunction with a curtain.)

    • 4

Build the side walls. You may choose to build the entire theater with four walls and a roof, but one alternative that requires less bricks is to build the side walls sloping downward toward the front and leaving the front end open to display the theater and permit interaction.

    • 5

Build the front wall. If you are not constructing a full building, this wall should be low but still slightly taller than a LEGO mini-figure. Leave window-sized holes in the front wall and build a small room behind them (just inside the building) to make a box office or ticket sales area. Make sure to also leave an area open as a doorway into the theater.

    • 6

Furnish the theater by adding chairs or benches for your LEGO audience. If your theater is a cinema, you may have a mini-projector for simulating film showings. Some creative builders choose to omit the back wall of the theater and set up a laptop for displaying films. If the theater has a stage, create props and a backdrop for it. Build a snacks and refreshments stand if you wish or add risers to the front of the stage to create more depth. Movie or show posters can be fashioned for the walls and speakers (either LEGO or real) added to the audience seating area. Expand upon the theater until it suits your tastes. When it is finished you can populate it with LEGO mini-figures.
