How to Build a LEGO Megaman

The roughly-square shape of Lego bricks makes them perfect for physical recreations of classic pixel art. One of the most famous low-resolution images is that of Mega Man, eponymous star of dozens of video games. Mega Man's limited color palette and small size make him an ideal choice for the beginning Lego pixel-artist.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an image of Mega Man to use as a visual reference. Images of some of the character's classic poses can be found in the Resource section, though you can find others in screen shots online. If you have the original Mega Man game, pressing the "Select" key will pause the game, allowing you to study the sprites.

    • 2

Make a copy of Mega Man's sprite on graph paper, coloring in one square for each pixel. This will help you see how many LEGO pieces you'll need to make the model and help you track your progress during construction.

    • 3

Collect all the Lego bricks you'll need to assemble the model. Use the standard blue, black and white bricks for those colors, and substitute yellow for the pink of Mega Man's face. This is the color used for the skin of Lego mini-figures, so the changed appearance will seem natural. Light-blue Lego bricks exist, but are less common than the other colors; you'll need to purchase a set or two that contains them if you don't have enough.

    • 4

Begin stacking Lego bricks to replicate the image at a resolution of one brick bump per pixel. Use pieces that are two bumps thick for a sturdier model. Place the bottom row of black bricks on a Lego baseplate to hold them in place, but feel free to remove the baseplate later if it makes building easier.

    • 5

Refer back to your graph-paper copy regularly to prevent mistakes, even crossing off squares as you go if it helps you keep track of where you are. Continue connecting bricks until you've finished the model.
