How to Interpret LEGO 1X Instructions

Each LEGO set comes with all of the pieces needed to build the set, as well as an instruction manual needed to assemble the set properly. Some websites list all of the parts, and note the instructions as "1X Instructions," meaning there is one instruction pamphlet in the kit. There are also websites that describe the pieces and places for the LEGO set, which requires learning some of the terminology used in LEGO building.

Open the instruction manual and find the step marked 1. Locate the pieces in the picture of step 1, and position them similarly to how they appear in the diagram.

    • 2

Locate the pieces needed for step 2, and attach them to the model in the pattern described. For example, if you start with a plate (one of the thinner LEGO pieces) that is two studs (knobs on the top of the piece) by eight studs long and need to attach a 2-by-4 brick (a thicker piece), place it so that your model looks like the one on the picture.

    • 3

Repeat this process with the other steps in the diagram until you are finished. As you progress, you may encounter other types of pieces. For example, flat plates, which are plate pieces without studs on the top. You may also have wing plates, which are shaped like wings, and come in a left and right variety.

    • 4

Turn to the last pages of the instruction section, after the numbered steps but before the ads, to find out if your model has any actions. Some models, for example, include a missile launcher, and these instructions show you how to activate it.

Close the manual and flip it over. On the back, you may see alternative model suggestions. The LEGO pieces you need will build these models, but the kit does not include instructions. The exception is when the set includes two sets of numbers, of which one should match the LEGO numbering system on your set. This means you need to buy two sets in order to make the model described.
