Determine the best location for the hideout. Decide on the activities you are interested in enjoying in your getaway spot. By deciding how your new hideout will be used, you can determine the best spot for building it and what type of structure to build. The benefits of indoor hideouts include easy access to power and comfortable weather conditions. For outdoor enthusiasts, one ideal permanent hideout is a tree house. A fort built on the ground is also an attractive outside option, if your yard does not have trees large enough for a tree house.
Determine the materials needed to build the hideout of your choice. If building an indoor hideout, use materials that are handy. Select your supplies based on availability and on how permanent the structure is intended to be. Also keep in mind privacy issues as you construct your retreat. For outdoor hideouts, use wood, pine straw, twigs, tree branches and other materials available in the outdoors so your hideout will weather the elements well. For indoor hideouts, comfort and availability are the only guidelines.
Build the hideout. If using wood and nails for an outside project, be sure to to build a hideout that is safe and sturdy. When building a tree house, use lightweight materials. A triangular-shaped hideout is an easy hideout design that can be constructed as an A-framed hideout in a backyard setting. A tent design using canvas or some other waterproof material is also a good design choice for a temporary outdoor hideout.
Furnish the hideout for comfort and fun. For an outdoor hideout, use weather-resistant furniture made of plastic or some other patio-type furniture. Bring games or craft projects to personalize your space and for entertainment. An indoor hideout is even easier to furnish since weather conditions are not a factor. Using pillows, chairs or blankets as furniture -- comfortable and portable -- makes furnishing any indoor hideout an easy task.
