How to Make a LEGO Sarlacc Pit

Sarlacci are mentioned several times in "Star Wars" books, but first appeared in "Return of the Jedi." In the film, Jabba the Hutt attempts to execute Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca the Wookiee by throwing them into the Great Pit of Carkoon, which is the lair of the largest known sarlacc. Only the gaping maw of the sarlacc is seen, depicted as a large, sandy hole with a few protruding tentacles. In 1997, the movie was released with a re-imagining of the sarlacc, which included a computer-generated beak and flailing tentacles.

Things You'll Need

10-by-10 base plate (black)
1-by-1 bricks (white, tan, yellow)
1-by-2 bricks (white, tan, yellow)
1-by-3 bricks (white, tan, yellow)
Angular 1-by-1 bricks (white, tan, yellow)
Tooth shaft, yellow (yellow or brown)
Base plates (yellow or tan)

Instructions

  Build a one-brick high wall around the perimeter of the black base plate using 1-by-2 and 1-by-3 bricks. Mix the colors.

  Rotate the platform so that it is square. Place a 1-by-2 brick on the wall vertically. Then insert a 1-by-1 angular brick with the round hole facing the interior of the enclosure. Place a 1-by-1 brick and then another angular brick. Continue placing bricks in this alternating pattern. If an angular brick falls on one of the corners of the wall, replace it and the 1-by-1 brick next to it with a 1-by-2 brick.

  Insert tooth shafts into the holes of the angular bricks to form the tentacles within the sarlacc's mouth. Rotate the tentacles so that they all point downward.

  Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 to build up the pit 10 to 20 stories high.

  Attach 10-by-10 yellow base plates to the right and left sides of the pit wall. Attach 8-by-10 yellow base plates to the top and bottom sides of the pit wall. This will create the desert surface around the mouth of the pit.

  Adhere the additional base plates to the structure to create as much surface area as is necessary for your model.

  Add 1-by-1 and 2-by-2 bricks to the platforms to make dunes and plateaus.

  Scatter the pit with LEGO body parts.

  Pour sand over the model to add realism.

  Stage the model with the sail barge and skiff owned by Jabba the Hutt; these ships are available as LEGO building kits.
