How to Make LEGO Minifigures

LEGO minifigures are toys that make for a great pastime. The ability to customize and manipulate them opens up endless amounts of possibilities. Whether you're looking to create a minifigure of a specific movie or video game character, or just looking to design your own, minifigures are an easy medium to work with. The best way to begin building your own minifigures is to break down the process into manageable steps. Once a LEGO enthusiast does this, he will be able to easily define the designs of his minifigures.

Instructions

  1. Design Your Minifigure

    • 1

Brainstorm different minifigure characters you would like to create. Once you have decided on a specific character, sketch several basic outlines of a LEGO minifigure. Draw costume designs over the minifigure outlines. Work slowly and focus on developing costume designs you can reference later on. Continue drawing until you create a design you like.

    • 2

Decide on what pieces you will need to create your LEGO minifigure, such specific armor pieces, hair and accessories. You can find any LEGO pieces you do not already have by following the links in the resource section below.

    • 3

Note any pieces that you will need to paint over, such as the head, body and weapons. If you are creating a minifigure of an existing character, observe specific details you will need to paint to capture their likeness. Decide on the areas on which you will need to use modeling putty to develop organic shapes or extending body parts.

    Building Your Minifigure

    • 4

Apply a base coat to any body pieces you will be painting. Use neutral, light colors as your base, such as white, grey and light brown. Work slowly and use the least amount of paint possible. Do not fully assemble the minifigure while painting; keep each body piece separate while you paint. Let each piece dry for thirty minutes.

    • 5

Paint the details of each minifigure piece, such as clothing folds and armor designs, using a thin paint brush. Work in layers, painting the lighter tones first and working down to your shades. Let each layer of paint dry before applying another. Do not add too much detail; keep the minifigure as simple as possible.

    • 6

Use modeling putty for extra details such as fur texture and enlarged body parts. Sculpt the putty by using either a modeling knife or the blunt end of your paint brushes. Let the putty sit overnight to dry. Paint over your putty by using the layer method mentioned in the previous step.

    • 7

Assemble your LEGO minifigure. If parts aren't fitting correctly, use your modeling knife to cut off excess putty and paint. Look over your LEGO minifigure and paint on any other details desired.
