Tinker Toy Projects

Tinker Toys are a classic construction toy that Hasbro sells. The basic components are rods and circular spools with holes through the center and every 45 degrees around the rim. Tinker Toy sets are available in both wood and plastic. Their modular design allows children to build all sorts of structures and then easily disassemble them to start over on a new project.
  1. Ferris Wheel

    • A classic construction that takes advantage of Tinker Toys' ability to form moving parts is a Ferris wheel. It is important to create a base that is strong enough to carry the full weight of a large wheel. If you'd like a challenging version of this project, create a Ferris wheel with seats that actually hang from the struts of the wheel. For a simpler challenge, try to create a crank that allows you to turn the wheel.

    Vehicles

    • The round pieces in Tinker Toy sets make excellent wheels. In fact, the whole design of Tinker Toys lends itself to the construction of wheels on axles. You can use the long pieces to create a dragster or stretch limo, or put together wings, tail and body to form a jet fighter. If you want to set the bar even higher, you can create a rocket that is able to stand up or even a giant rolling siege engine.

    Buildings

    • Since Tinker Toys are a classic construction toy, constructing buildings presents itself as a classic Tinker Toy project. Create a city sky line with buildings that are tall and short with flat, slanting or pointed tops. Lay out towels as a river and build a bridge over it, complete with suspension struts. If you're more interested in a detailed architecture project, try using a whole set or more on one building. You can go for height, stability or simply an interesting combination of terraces.

    Animals

    • For an interesting challenge, you can try creating Tinker Toy animals. With their long rods and 45-degree angles, Tinker Toys are especially suited to building tall or bulky animals like giraffes, elephants or dinosaurs. Building a simple rectangle as a core, however, can allow you to create all sorts of animals by adding legs, wings, a head or a tail. Use wheels and hinges to create moving wings, or simply put your animal on wheels to roll it around.
