Instructions for a LEGO 3178 Seaplane

LEGO has a wide variety of sets ranging from the fantastical "Star Wars" universe to the more mundane "City" series, which has a Seaplane. The Seaplane is a great addition to an ocean-side city because it doesn't need a traditional runway to take off and land. LEGO set number 3178, the Seaplane, includes a plane, as well as two LEGO people--called Minifigs--a pilot and an attendant, as well as a windsock.

    • 1

Attach a white 4-by-6 upward curved hull brick to the back half of a 2-by-6-stud plate. Stick a yellow 2-by-2 plate inside this brick, at the back of the bottom layer. This is the back of the model.

    • 2

Attach a second upward-curved brick to the front of the black plate. Stick a 2-by-3-stud plate over the yellow piece, pointing to the back of the model.

    • 3

Attach a 1-by-4 black plate to the sides of the model, centered on the rim. Stick a 1-by-4 at the front of these two pieces, across the interior of the cockpit piece. Place a 2-by-2 plate with sweeping wings, which form a V, at the front of the model.

    • 4

Stack a 1-by-2 plate with the cockpit controls on top of a red 1-by-2 brick. Attach this to the cockpit behind the black crossbeam. Attach a yellow 2-by-2 upward-angled brick to the back of the tail, with the angle facing the back.

    • 5

Attach the grey 2-by-2 tall brick to the black plate in the center of the model. The angle should point away from the model. Stick the two ring-shaped tall bricks between the tall and the yellow bricks, with the holes on the sides.

    • 6

Stick the yellow nose brick, which looks a little like the sweeping black plate, on the front of the airplane. Attach a 1-by-4 L-bracket plate to both sides of the airplane. Attach the yellow doors to the model behind these L-brackets, and angle them so they close the back of the plane.

    • 7

Stick the two license number decals to two 1-by-6 upward curved bricks. Attach these to the back of the model as the tail. Place two opposite 2-by-4 wing plates so they cover the doors, the tail, and the black ring bricks.

    • 8

Cover the tail with a black 2-by-10 plate. Open one of the doors and stick the suitcase inside the compartment, then close the door again.

    • 9

Attach a white 1-by-4 flat plate across the two small yellow wing pieces. Place a white 2-by-8 plate across the model behind that. Stick a yellow 2-by-2 plate at the back of this.

    • 10

Cover the tail with two 1-by-10 curved bricks, so they cover the yellow and white plates at the front of the model. Attach a translucent red 1-by-1 round plate to the back of the white cross-piece, on the right of the model. Stick a similar green piece on the left.

    • 11

Place the cockpit windshield on the front of the model. Stick the white 4-by-4 curved plate on top of this, so that it covers the flat plate. Attach the cockpit accent decal, white with two yellow stripes, on this piece.

    • 12

Stick the two 4-by-8 stud white wing plates centered on the cross beams, pointing away from the cockpit. Place a 2-by-8-stud white plate across the model, so it joins the two wings and the yellow tail piece.

    • 13

Attach a white 1-by-8 plate and two white 2-by-4 wing plates to the back of the model to form a tail fin. The two wings should point in opposite directions, with the straight plate at the back.

    • 14

Place a translucent red 1-by-1 on the tip of the right wing, and a translucent green on the left. Stick two 2-by-1 angled vent plates on the wing, on the 3rd and 4th row of studs out, with the tall end pointing forward. Repeat on the other wing.

    • 15

Insert a Technic pin into a black 2-by-2 plate with a Technic hole. Attach a propeller to this. Make two units, and attach them to the wing under the angled vent pieces.

    • 16

Flip the model over and attach two 2-by-2 plates with Technic pins sticking out of the bottom to the bottom-rear of the lowest plate.

    • 17

Attach a black 2-by-3 wing plate to the front of an upward curved 1-by-6 brick. This becomes the front of a skid. Attach two 2-by-2 Technic hole plate behind this, with one of the plates overhanging.

    • 18

Join a 1-by-6 upward angled brick to the back of the skid. Attach a second 2-by-3 wing to the back of this, and a 1-by-2 angled vent plate. to the end of this. Place a 1-by-8 flat yellow plate across the wings and 2-by-2 plates, with a 1-by-2 flat plate at the front.

    • 19

Place a 1-by-8 flat yellow plate across the wings and 2-by-2 plates, with a 1-by-2 flat plate at the front. Stick a 1-by-4 plate across the exposed plates. Make a second, mirrored unit for the second skid.

    • 20

Attach four Technic connectors to the H-shaped pin piece. Insert black pins into the ends of each connector. Attach the two skids to this unit, to complete the skid piece, and affix it to the bottom of the model using the two Technic pins.

    • 21

Flip the model over. Stick the tail decal on the tail piece and attach it to the back of the plane. Lift the cockpit windshield and roof off to slide the pilot minifig into place.

    Windsock

    • 22

Build the fuel barrel by stacking three 2-by-2 colored round plates on top of the white 2-by-2 round plate. The order is the white base, the green plate, red plate, and then white plate. Stick the tap piece in the center, between the four studs on top.

    • 23

Stick the fuel barrel in the corner of the green 4-by-4 plate. Place the red 2-by-2 cone next to this on the plate.

    • 24

Stick a 1-by-2 plate with one stud on the end of the rod piece. Attach a white 2-by-2 round plate to this piece, and then stick the red 2-by-2 cone on the end of this.

    • 25

Place the 1-by-1 plate with control decals on the single stud at the other end of the rod. Insert this into the upright cone.

    • 26
