LEGO Ideas

From making stationary objects to making models with moving parts or even pieces of abstract art, Legos seem to be able to capture the imagination of both the young and old. Use these creative little modular pieces to challenge your mind and try your hand at reproducing an ordinary object piece by piece.
  1. Model Cars

    • A favorite pastime of many big and little boys is building model cars. Another favorite pastime is building imaginative items using Lego plastic parts. Combine the two activities and use Lego parts to create model cars.

A model car Lego project requires a good amount of thought and can range from a simple car base with wheels to comprehensive designs with many moving parts. You can design a custom creation or purchase a Lego car kit.

    Portraits

    • An interesting idea for using Legos is to create a portrait of a person or animal with a single layer of Lego pieces. Using these small pieces to create a portrait is a real challenge. As with any Lego design, it's easiest to start with a real portrait for inspiration.

Use the Lego pieces to create the background of the portrait. Then use multiple colors to create the shape of hair, eyes, noses -- paying special attention to shadow lines for realistic emphasis. Take a cue from looking at the pixels of a digital picture and your portrait will be more accurate.

    Action Figures

    • If you enjoy the likes of Transformers, Iron Man or an old favorite like R2D2, you will enjoy trying to replicate your favorite movie action figures out of small Lego pieces. Making your favorite action figure come to life will require the use of small, large and moving Lego pieces.

A fine example of a moveable part Lego-built action figure is the Iron Man model featured on the Visual Streak website.

    Mechanical Creations

    • Combining Lego parts with electrical or mechanical mechanisms is the ultimate use of these ingenious little pieces. Taking your imagination to the next level with a intricate Lego project like this will require a working knowing of electrical wiring along with a moveable design.

Perhaps one of the most amazing mechanical Lego creation constructed is an entire fully functional pinball machine as designed and built by Gerrit Bronsveld and Martijn Boogaarts from The Netherlands.
