How to Light Up LEGO Blocks

LEGO building blocks engage young children and sophisticated adults alike -- the blocks come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes and play sets often come with LEGO people, animals and landscape accessories made to snap in to the block structure. Children can snap LEGO pieces together to build simple buildings, while adults can use them to construct elaborate dioramas and life-sized plastic worlds. Sophisticated LEGO designers can add lights to hollow LEGO pieces to enhance the display.

Instructions

    • 1

Carve holes or a face in a hollow LEGO accessory. LEGO people work perfectly for this craft. (Remove the head from the body before carving.) If the LEGO accessory already has windows, doors or other holes that the light can shine through, skip this step.

    • 2

Insert a standard-size LED light into the bottom or back of the LEGO accessory. If necessary, use a craft knife to enlarge the hole so the light can fit in. The two leads, or prongs, should stick straight out of the opening.

    • 3

Attach the LEGO piece to the desired location in the display. If using a LEGO head, reattach it to the body.

    • 4

Cut a hole in the back of the LEGO person or wherever the LED prongs are located so that the prongs can stick out to connect with a battery.

    • 5

Connect the LED light prongs to a lithium battery, using tape if necessary. The light will turn on and shine through the holes carved in your LEGO piece.
