Projects Using Legos

Legos are construction toys that consist of interlocking plastic bricks of different colors and an assortment of minifigures and accessories. The Danish company, Lego, was founded in 1932 and first made wooden toys. It wasn't until 1958 that the interlocking Lego system was introduced. Legos provide entertainment for children, but they can also be used as a learning toy in classrooms and at home. They are versatile enough to be used for an array of different academic projects.
  1. Cooperative Wall

    • If you do this activity in the classroom, split children up into four equal groups. Explain that you are going to build a house and each group will be responsible for one wall. Give each group a ruler and a base plate to build their wall upon. Explain the importance of each wall being the same size and that the groups must work together, follow directions and build their wall to the proper height and length. Instruct each team to build a wall that is 7-1/2 inches long and 3 inches tall. Each wall must have one door and two windows. Once all teams have finished their walls, bring all four together to make a house.

    Fine Art

    • Display a book of fine art near the area where Lego bricks are kept or find several pictures online of famous artwork and print them out for children to look at and study. The art can be anything from a painting to a sculpture to architecture. Invite children to use the Lego bricks to create their own version of the artwork.

    Alphabet Race

    • This activity is best done in a classroom setting. Split the class into two teams. Each team should have the same number and size of Lego bricks available to them. One by one, each child on a team must use the Lego bricks to make a letter. After one child finishes making her letter, the next person in line on the team will make the next letter of the alphabet. The first team to reach "Z" wins!

    Town

    • This is an ongoing project. Use a large piece of plywood to display your creations. Use paint to make roads, grass and other landscape elements on the plywood. Using your imagination and the Lego bricks, create a town completely out of Legos. Display minifigures walking through your town, along with vehicles, animals and any other structures you can think of. You can add or demolish new structures as space allows. If you are using this idea in a classroom, allow each child to contribute a structure to the town.
