How to Make a LEGO Big Mario

The original "Super Mario Bros." game for the Nintendo Entertainment System featured a pixelated Mario that grew to his large form by eating a mushroom. The simple pixel structure of the characters in this game make them ideal for conversion into LEGO form. By breaking down the pixels of the in-game character and rebuilding the character with LEGO bricks in place of pixels, you can create your own LEGO big Mario in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Nine 2-by-2 brown bricks
  • Six 2-by-2 red bricks
  • Five 2-by-2 orange bricks
  • Seven 2-by-4 brown bricks
  • Two 2-by-4 red bricks
  • Five 2-by-4 orange bricks
  • Five 2-by-6 brown bricks
  • Five 2-by-6 red bricks
  • Six 2-by-6 orange bricks
  • Four 2-by-8 brown bricks

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a 2-by-8 red block end to end with a 2-by-2 red block, followed by another 2-by-8 red block. Stack a 2-by-4 red block on top of the first 2-by-8 block so that it is directly in the middle of the 2-by-8 block. At the end of this block, stack a 2-by-6 red block so that all of the blocks are connected together. This will form Mario's hat.

    • 2

Connect a 2-by-6 brown block beneath the hat you built in Step 1 so that it is flush with the leftmost edge (all blocks will be flush with the leftmost edge unless specified). The order of blocks to the right of this brown block is as follows: 2-by-4 orange, 2-by-2 brown, 2-by-2 orange.

    • 3

Place the fourth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-2 orange block, 2-by-2 brown block, 2-by-6 orange block, 2-by-2 brown block, 2-by-6 orange block. Place the fifth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-2 orange, 2-by-4 brown, 2-by-6 orange, 2-by-2 brown, 2-by-6 orange.

    • 4

Place a 2-by-4 brown block on the next row so that half of the block is extended off the left side of the sculpture. Stack two 2-by-2 brown blocks on top of the jutting section of the block. Place the rest of the sixth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-8 orange, 2-by-8 brown.

    • 5

Place the seventh row of blocks so that the leftmost block is lined up with the orange blocks in the row above. The blocks should be in the following order: 2-by-8 orange, 2-by-6 orange. You should now have a sculpture of Mario's head.

    • 6

Place a 2-by-4 brown block on the eighth row so that half of the block is extended off the left side of the sculpture. Place the rest of the eighth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-2 red, 2-by-6 brown.

    • 7

Place a 2-by-4 brown block on the ninth row so that half of the block is extended off the left side of the sculpture. Place the rest of the ninth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-2 brown, 2-by-2 red, 2-by-4 brown, 2-by-2 red, 2-by-6 brown.

    • 8

Place a 2-by-4 brown block on the tenth row so that half of the block is extended off the left side of the sculpture. Place the rest of the tenth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-4 brown, 2-by-8 red, 2-by-8 brown.

    • 9

Place the eleventh row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-4 orange, 2-by-2 brown, 2-by-2 red, 2-by-2 orange, 2-by-4 red, 2-by-2 orange, 2-by-2 red, 2-by-2 brown, 2-by-4 orange. Place the twelve row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-6 orange, 2-by-6 red, 2-by-6 red, 2-by-6 orange. Place the thirteenth row of blocks in the following order: 2-by-4 orange, 2-by-8 red, 2-by-8 red, 2-by-4 orange.

    • 10

Place a 2-by-6 red block on the fourteenth row so that it lines up with the leftmost edge of the red blocks in the row above. Place a second 2-by-6 red block on the fourteenth row so that it lines up with the rightmost edge of the red blocks in the row above.

    • 11

Place a 2-by-6 brown block on the fifteenth row so that one-third of the block hangs off of the leftmost edge of the row above it. Place another 2-by-6 brown block on the fifteenth row so that one-third of the block hangs off of the rightmost edge of the row above it.

    • 12

Place a 2-by-8 brown block on the sixteenth row so that one-fourth of the block hangs off of the leftmost edge of the row above it. Place another 2-by-8 brown block on the sixteenth row so that one-fourth of the block hangs off of the rightmost edge of the row above it. Press all of the blocks together until they lock into place to finish the Mario sculpture.
