How to Use K'Nex & Legos Together

Though Lego building bricks have long been the toy of choice for creative building play, K'Nex building sets provide a similar type of fun while being better suited for exploring framework structures. Almost anyone who's ever enjoyed both play sets has wondered if there's a way to combine them and build Lego and K'Nex structures that interlock and connect with one another. Use K'Nex bricks to achieve this or make alterations of your own for customized joining pieces.

Instructions

  1. K'nex Bricks

    • 1

Build the base Lego portion of your structure, or as much of it as you can before adding any K'Nex pieces. While building, attach a K'Nex brick to each of the points on your Lego structure where you want K'Nex pieces to attach. For these to work, you have to build them into the structure so their tops are exposed.

    • 2

Insert short K'Nex sticks into the holes in the center of the K'Nex bricks. Use either a green connector (this is the shortest K'Nex rod) or a white rod (this is the next largest).

    • 3

Attach a connector piece to the end of the rod that protrudes from each of the K'Nex blocks, and/or clip connectors onto the side of the rod. Build the K'nex structures onto these.

    Drilled Legos

    • 4

Hand-soften and flatten out about a quarter cup of clay to form a thick tablet shape.

    • 5

Press a Lego brick into the tablet.

    • 6

Drill a hole through the center of the Lego with a ¼ inch drill bit.

    • 7

Use the drilled Lego following the instructions in Section 1.

    Joint Pieces

    • 8

Mix the epoxy in the disposable container according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 9

Select a connector bit and a Lego brick that you want to combine. Use any combination you want, but select a Lego brick with a thick side (not flat) and a K'Nex connector that isn't blue or white (as these pieces don't have a flat edge).

    • 10

Apply glue to one of the flat edges of the connector piece and press it against the side of the Lego brick. Let the epoxy cure and dry with the Lego brick standing on its end, the connector piece on top.

    • 11

Make additional Lego and K'Nex hybrids in the same manner. Once the glue cures, use them to connect K'Nex and Lego structures.
