How to Build a LEGO Tank & Airplane

The universality of LEGO as a toy for unlocking creativity in children of all ages is well known. Even though the modern LEGO offering includes many prepackaged models and themes, invention and design are still the cornerstone of the LEGO toy. Improvising the pieces into something unique is part of the charm! If the goal is to create a tank or airplane from scratch, there are a few concepts to consider first.

  1. Building With LEGO

    • 1

Develop a plan of what to create. For most LEGO lovers, the conceptualization process is organic and in the moment. Part of the fun of LEGO is the 'build on the fly' application of it, by getting creative with whatever pieces are available. For the more deliberate LEGO creator though, sketching a design out first and then tracking down the appropriate pieces will help to better match the final product with the initial vision.

Fitting your idea to the LEGO resources you have is part of the creative fun.

Organize the LEGO pieces. After a conceptual design is chosen, lay out the appropriate pieces, smallest to largest and like with like, to give a sense of the available resources to work with. Organizing LEGO pieces in this way will help to determine a starting point and identify any critical missing pieces. The builder can also take stock and go back to the original design and make alterations if necessary.

Build the LEGO model from the ground up. For tanks and planes, start with the wheels and wheel base, move on to the chassis, and then create the top finish features such as wings and propeller(s), or tank-gun and turret. This will ensure the model fits together appropriately and in a stand-alone manner. For the more complicated set-pieces like the propeller or turret, build them separately and then attach them to the main body of the model.
