Instructions for MindStorms NXT

The Lego Mindstorms NXT kit is the second generation of Lego programmable robotics. The kit comes with the NXT brick, or "brain" that controls the motor functions of the robot, two touch sensors, one ultrasonic sensor, one color sensor, three motor sensors, seven connector cables, over 600 Lego building pieces and a CD with the computer instruction program. You can build an unlimited number of robots using these pieces and then program them to do whatever you want them to.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what kind of robot you want to build. You can brainstorm and create your own original robot or you can search online for examples of robots that others have made. Based on the design, you may need some or all of the sensors.

    • 2

Connect each sensor your robot will use to the brick using a connector cable, similarly to how you would connect an Ethernet cable from a computer to a modem. Use a different cable cord for each sensor you need. Insert one end of the cable into a sensor and the other end of the cable into a slot on the brick.

    • 3

Connect the sensors to the robot using building pieces. Whether you use the sensor as wheels on a car or claws for gripping, attach each sensor securely to your framework or else it may wobble or break apart and not work properly after you download your program.

    • 4

Build the rest of the robot. Use any additional building pieces you need to complete your project, such as those to extend arms or legs or pieces used to hide or restrain cords running to the sensors.

    • 5

Open the Mindstorms application on your computer. Drag and drop the program blocks from the categories on the left-hand side of the screen to the workspace in the middle. Connect the program block instructions together in the order you want your robot to follow them.

    • 6

Modify each program block instruction as needed using the menu at the bottom of the screen. For example, if you want a motor connected to sensor "B" to rotate three times, change the duration to "3."

    • 7

Connect the NXT brick of your robot to your computer using the USB connector cable. Click on the "Download" button in the Mindstorms application to download your program to your robot. After the download completes, disconnect the USB cord, run the program and watch your robot go.
