How to Make a Kite With Wrapping Paper

Constructing your own kite is a fun activity for all children, with some help from an adult. The kite can be put together quickly, and colorful wrapping paper can serve as the construction material. Look in the closet for some leftover holiday paper, which will fit smoothly over the kite frame. In less than an hour, this kite will be flying high over the backyard or neighborhood park.

  • 20-inch bamboo stick

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1/2 inch slits into the ends of each bamboo stick with the craft knife.

    • 2

Measure 10 inches from the top of the longer stick and mark it with a pencil. Position the center of the shorter stick over the mark in a cross formation.

    • 3

Wind the string around and under the cross formation, back and forth in an "x" to secure the sticks together, keeping the string attached to the string ball.

    • 4

Bring the string to the notched ends of the top stick. Thread the string through each notched stick end, going around in a diamond shape twice while keeping the string taught. Bring the string back to the center and rewrap the cross formation. Knot the string securely and cut it.

    • 5

Cut the wrapping paper to a length of 26 inches. Mark the center of each top edge and 12 inches from the top of the side edges with the pencil. Cut from mark to mark with the scissors to create a diamond shape. The diamond shape should be slightly larger than your kite frame.

    • 6

Position the crossed sticks on the back side of the wrapping paper, with the ends of the sticks at the diamond points.

    • 7

Fold the paper over over the string frame, and glue down the edges to the back side of the wrapping paper.

    • 8

Cut a string to measure 24 inches, and tie it to the top and bottom of the kite at the stick ends for a bridle.

    • 9

Cut six feet of string for the kite tail. Attach the string to the bottom of the kite at the stick end, and tie three inch pieces of ribbon to the tail every four inches.

    • 10

Tie the string ball to the bridle at approximately eight inches from the top of the bridle.
