LEGO Activities in Virginia

Legos are a timeless toy for all ages, from toddlers to teenagers and even adults. However, these days Legos aren't just toys, but can be used to teach children about architecture, science, math, creativity and problem-solving. Families in Virginia can take advantage of several Lego activities and exhibits throughout the state where children can get hands-on learning opportunities with Legos.
  1. Virginia FIRST LEGO League

    • The Virginia FIRST LEGO League is a program developed by the nonprofit organization FIRST and the Lego Company to provide students with engineering challenges using Legos. Teams of 10 players ages 9 to 14 work together to design and build a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology. The teams display their work at regional competitions, which are held throughout Virginia. During the competitions, each team's robot must complete specific challenges and teams make presentations sharing their design theories. Teams compete against one another and are evaluated in teamwork, robot design and challenge solutions. The goal of the Virginia FIRST LEGO League is to help kids use science and math skills to solve real-world problems. According to the Virginia FIRST LEGO League, a new challenge is offered each September to FIRST LEGO Leagues around the globe, and teams have eight weeks to develop and build their robots.

National Building Museum Lego Architecture Exhibit

    • The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., offers a Lego Architecture Exhibit called "Towering Ambition" for Lego enthusiasts of all ages. The exhibit features 15 large-scale models created by architectural artist Adam Reed Tucker. The models, which use up to 450,000 Lego bricks, include famous buildings like the World Trade Center, Empire State Building, St. Louis Gateway Arch and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. The exhibit also offers visitors the opportunity to create their own Lego community by building residential, institutional, commercial or industrial Lego structures and displaying them on a large city map. As the day progresses with more museum visitors, the Lego city grows. According to the National Building Museum, Tucker is one of 11 Lego-Certified Professionals in the world, and used engineering concepts, sculptural form and intricate designs in creating his large-scale structures.

    BrickFair

    • BrickFair is the largest Lego festival in the United State and has activities for all ages. The festival is held every August in northern Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C. BrickFair features hundreds of Lego creations designed and built by Lego enthusiasts from all over the world. The 60,000-square-foot exhibit features Lego buildings, trains, planes, monsters, gardens and other creative Lego designs. While the actual artistic exhibits are "look and don't touch," there is a play area where little Lego architects can build their own masterpieces. There are also a few interactive exhibits, where children and adults can get a hands-on experience with the designs. In addition to the exhibits, there is a BrickFilms movie area, where every movie is created using Lego bricks and figures. According to BrickFair.com, the movies are filmed using stop-motion or digital techniques.
