How to Make an Aluminum-Can Jet Airplane

An aluminum-can jet airplane could take a child on a flight of fancy to any land of his imagination. Made from supplies found around the house, the construction activity delivers a basic and subtle lesson about jet-plane engineering and mechanics. A jet-plane-themed birthday party could incorporate making the plane as a craft activity and they also make a great take-home gift. The jet planes could also be made in advance to decorate the birthday table.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tops and bottoms of the soup cans and wash them thoroughly.

    • 2

Connect the cans with the masking tape to make a long tube.

    • 3

Draw a 5-inch diameter circle on the poster board using the compass and pencil. Cut out the circle with the scissors.

    • 4

Make a slit from one circle edge to the center of the circle. Slide the edges in to create a cone. Tape the edges closed and tape the cone to one end of the connected soup cans.

    • 5

Cut three 6-inch long and 3-inch wide triangles from the poster board for wings. Cut off the tips of the long triangle ends.

    • 6

Cut one matchbox in half, lengthwise to create engines. Tape the engines to the bottom of the center of the wing. Repeat for a second wing and engines.

    • 7

Tape the wings to the sides of the soup-can tube.

    • 8

Tape the third triangle to the back of the tube, facing upward.

    • 9

Paint the entire airplane gray. Paint a window at the front of the cone area. Paint small windows along the sides of the airplane.
