How to Build Boats Out of Popsicle Sticks

Popsicle-stick boats make a quick and creative project for young children with just a little help from a nearby adult. The craft is tailor-made for hot summer afternoons, when children savor icy Popsicles and a boat race adds an extra element of fun to park and pool activities. The boats can be left in their natural state or painted bright colors with washable poster paints. This uncomplicated project would also work well for birthday-party or summer-day-camp craft activity sessions.

Things You'll Need

15 Popsicle sticks for each boat
Mylar plastic
Scissors
Ruler
Plastic bowl
Epoxy glue
Paper

Instructions

  Measure the length of the Popsicle stick. Cut a square of the Mylar plastic to the length and width of the stick measurement.

  Mix both parts of the epoxy glue together with an extra Popsicle stick.

  Apply glue to a flat side of one Popsicle stick with an extra stick, and glue the stick to the Mylar, so it's perpendicular. Repeat with all sticks to create a flat boat base.

  Apply glue to the long narrow edge of one Popsicle stick for a sailboat rudder, and apply it to the bottom side of the base lengthwise. The stick will appear to be hanging from its long side on the bottom of the boat base.

  Apply glue to the bottom narrow edge of one stick for a sailboat mast. Glue it to the top of the base, standing up, in the center.

  Cut a triangle from the paper to serve as a sail and glue it to the mast.
