How to Make a LEGO Gun With a Trigger

The Lego building system allows you to construct just about anything, including a gun that shoots rubber bands. It requires a little mechanical knowledge, but you can build one using only Technic pieces, standard LEGO bricks, and a couple of elastic bands from your ammo stock.

Things You'll Need

  • LEGO pieces
  • LEGO Technic rods and endcaps
  • 3 or more elastic bands

Instructions

  1. Firing Mechanism

    • 1

Hold two P-shaped Technic sliders and attach them with two 2-stud square plates on the stem of the P. Insert two Technic pins in the holes facing outward.

    • 2

Turn the piece so the plates are facing upward. Wrap a small elastic band around the upper half-pins.

    • 3

Attach two round single-stud bricks to the bottom of a 1 x 2 stud brick. Wrap the rubber band around the bottom studs, and attach a 1 x 4 stud plate to the top to trap the elastic band. This entire unit becomes the firing mechanism.

    • 4

Attach a 1 x 4 stud plate to the bottom-center of a 12-stud-long brick with Technic holes in the side. Repeat to make two-side pieces.

    • 5

Connect the firing mechanism to the side bricks. Attach the 4-stud plate on the firing mechanism to the end of the plates on the bottom of the pieces. Connect one of the pins to the side brick as well. The P-pieces should stick up at about a 30 degree angle.

    • 6

Build up the wall around the back of the device-around the P-part of the firing mechanism. Add two more layers to the bottoms of the plates to both reinforce the plate and raise it to the level of another brick. Then add a brick that extends one stud beyond the back.

    • 7

Attach a 1 x 4 stud brick across the back, then connect a 2 x 4 stud brick to that piece, fitting to the channel.

    • 8

Attach a 5-stud-long rod to a thick washer. Slide three 1 x 2 stud bricks onto this piece. Attach the last one (closest to the washer) to the last brick you attached onto the main part of the gun.

    • 9

Encase the entire back in a 3-stud-thick set of bricks. Make sure you cover any pieces that seem loose. Make sure you add one more row of single-stud plates across the tops beside the trigger mechanism.

    Trigger Assembly

    • 10

Take a 2 x 8 stud plate and attach two 2 x 4 stud plates on top of each other at the far end. Then place a 2-stud square flat plate at the front of those bricks, and another 2-stud square-studded plate to the back.

    • 11

Place two more 2 x 4 stud flat plates at the front of this trigger assembly, perpendicular to the front of the trigger.

    • 12

Attach two 2-stud square plates in the center of the front plates, and attach two 1 x 2 stud flat plates on either side.

    • 13

Place a 3 x 2 stud plate across the top. This whole thing becomes the trigger.

    • 14

Connect the back of the trigger to the bricks attached to the rod from earlier. Make sure the two flat plates on the front of the trigger slide on the sides of the gun.

    • 15

Attach a 4-stud plate centered on a 2-stud flat plate. Place that 1-stud ahead of the trigger. Make another, and attach it across the trigger, holding that in place. This crossbeam becomes important later, so place it toward the front.

    • 16

Use some individual studs to attach an elastic band from the crossbeam to the back of the trigger assembly. When you pull the trigger assembly, it should flip the P-shaped trigger piece up, and then reset the device.

    Barrel and Handle

    • 17

Flip the entire device over, and start building a handle for the bottom of the gun. You should make it at least 8-studs long by 4-studs wide. You also want to make a piece that extends around the front of the trigger.

    • 18

Assembly a barrel that's 2 studs wide by about 20 studs long. Attach that to the front of the gun, in line with the flipper part. Reinforce this piece with some 4-stud-wide flat plates to make sure it doesn't buckle when the gun is loaded.

    • 19

Cover the entire barrel, in flat plates, and add a plate that extends past the front by one stud's length.

    • 20

Load the gun by slipping an elastic around the front of the barrel, and then looping it around the half-pins on the flipping part of the trigger mechanism. Fire the gun by pulling the trigger.
