Instructions to Make a LEGO Car

Building a Lego car is an endeavor that leaves much to your imagination. A car needs to have wheels, but beyond that, anything goes. For building a standard four-wheel car, there are some tips and strategies you can follow to help speed up your project. But remember to use your creativity to make the car your own.
  1. Basic Construction

    • A Lego car can have as many wheels as you like, but a simple construction project consists of bolting four wheels onto the bottom of a long, flat Lego piece, then building the body of the car on top. If you have single wheel pieces--individual wheels as opposed to pieces that contain two wheels--this will allow your car to turn more easily than wheel pieces that are two wheels on a single axle.

Depending on the length of the piece you choose to attach to the wheels, you can build a long or short car. As long as you don't build a large frame and use a lot of many add-ons, you shouldn't worry about bending the wheel base frame, as LEGO pieces are strong enough to hold a fairly heavy weight without bending. If you want to add extra support, you can add an extra set of wheels in the middle of the frame, though this will make turning more difficult.

If you have trouble removing some pieces that you have attached, there is a special Lego tool that helps you pry pieces apart. It is not part of a standard LEGO set and must be purchased separately.

    Adding Extras

    • Once you have the basic structure for your car, you can start building the other extra features, like seats, a windshield and a roof. Use your imagination for this process and don't be afraid to experiment.

Clear Lego pieces are excellent for windshields and windows, and you can use Lego struts that have hinges on them for doors, a trunk and for a spoiler on the back of the car. Don't forget to add an antenna Lego piece to the front or back of the car as a radio antenna.

If you want to make space for a Lego mini-figurine to fit inside the car, make it at least 4-by-4 (in Lego block dimensions) so that the mini-figurine's legs can be bent into a sitting position. For decoration, place a steering wheel piece in front of the mini-figurine. These extra pieces are not part of a basic Lego set, but you can purchase them separately in accessory sets, or get them from more advanced sets.
