What Is Playdough?
Playdough is a clay-like substance that children can use to create different structures and shapes. According to ideafinder.com, Play-Doh (the official brand) was created in 1956 for the inventor's sister in law, a teacher. She needed something similar to modeling clay for her young students. It has been popular ever since. It was not long before people discovered that they too could make their own version.
How to Make Playdough
This is a fairly simple recipe from easy-kids-recipes.com, and one that children can actually eat. Combine 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 6 tsp. of cream of tartar in a pan. Combine 3 cups of water and 3 tsp. of vegetable oil in a bowl. Carefully stir the liquid into the dry ingredients over medium to low heat until it thickens. Add a few drops of food coloring and continue to cook for five minutes. Remove from heat. Dump it onto a cutting board and knead for a few more minutes. Add flour if the dough is too sticky. The playdough should last for up to three months if it is kept in a plastic bag or other airtight container.
Another Recipe
Another playdough recipe comes from teachnet.com. Peanut butter playdough simply combines 1 cup of creamy peanut butter, 1/4 cup of honey, and 1 cup of instant nonfat dry milk. Children will love kneading these ingredients together. Watch out for those with milk or peanut allergies; for them, you may want to find an alternate recipe.
