Where Is the Largest Lego Statue in the World?

Lego toys are so popular that millions of the little blocks are sold every year and there is even an amusement park dedicated to them called LEGOLAND. Legos are made for kids, but they inspire adults, too. Since 1980, the battle has been going on to see who could make the largest Lego statue in the world. The record is constantly changing, but now stands in Vienna, Austria.
  1. Features

    • Using 500,000 bricks, the largest Lego statue was created during the 100 Years of Friends of Children festival in October 2008. This was a four day festival and children helped put together this record-holding Lego statue.

    Size

    • The Lego statue stands 96 feet, 9 inches tall, just barley beating a 96-foot record held by Great Britain only five months earlier. That's about as tall as an eight-story office building.

    Significance

    • This Lego statue is the fifth record in five years. With competition heating up to become the owner of the largest Lego tower, new towers are bound to be built worldwide.

    History

    • The first Lego record was in 1980. The structure stood 43 feet tall and was made with about 100,000 Lego bricks. This record was set in Great Britain--the first of three Lego records set in the U.K.
The United States has also achieved three Lego records: the first in 1990, the second in 2005, and the third in 2007 with a structure that measured 94 feet, 3 inches tall.
Lego fans have also set records for the longest Lego construction at 5,179 feet, a full-scale Lego car, and a 122-foot Lego bridge.

    Considerations

    • Record-breaking Lego constructions are fragile and have to be protected from the elements while under construction and on public display. The towers are so tall that they have to be held up by wires; the final pieces must be installed with the help of cranes in order to achieve the record.
