How to Make a Lego Rubber Band Gun

From big and bulky pieces to small and specific, Legos have created innovations from Bionicle robots to the Legoland theme parks. These linking blocks have even inspired artist Nathan Sawaya to craft his creations completely with Lego blocks. With Technic pieces by Lego, you can craft a simple, sturdy and effective rubber band gun in minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 4-stud axles
  • 1 24 or 40 tooth gear
  • 2 3m friction pegs
  • 1 Angle connector
  • 2 Technic pins with friction
  • 2 1x12 beam w/11 holes
  • 1 1x16 beam w/15 holes
  • 1 2-stud axle
  • 2 1x11.5 double angle connectors
  • 2 3m friction pin
  • Rubber band

Instructions

  1. The Body and Triggering Device

    • 1

Insert an 4-stud axle into the second hole of one of the 1x12 beams with 11 holes. Then thread the center of the 40-tooth gear onto the 4-stud axle.

    • 2

Stick a 3m friction pin into the first open hole available on the 1x12 beam after the gear. Thread the angle connector onto this 3m friction pin, allowing it to swivel. The angle connector stops the 40-tooth gear from moving when pushed against it.

    • 3

Pop two Technic pins with friction into the bottom two holes of the1x12 beam. Attach the first two holes of the 1x16 beam with 15 holes onto these Technic pins.

    • 4

Run the second 1x12 beam with 11 holes parallel to the initial 1x12 beam. Connect it to the Beam 1x16 beam , 40-tooth gear and open Technic pins. It will now look like a tuning fork with a gear mechanism at the top.

    • 5

Thread the second 4-stud axle into the end of the angle connector hanging out from the base. It becomes the triggering device.

    The Handle

    • 6

Insert and center the 3m friction pin into the second hole at the open end of the 1x16 beam with 15 holes. This 3m friction pin will not be connected to any other piece.

    • 7

Slide the 2-stud axle into the third hole of the 1x16 beam, above the 3m friction pin.

    • 8

Stick a Technic Pin with Friction into the fourth hole of 1x16 beam above the 2-stud axle. Flip to other side and put your second Technic pin into the fifth hole. It will be deposited above the first Technic pin, but sticking out in the opposite direction.

    • 9

Take the first 1x11.5 double angle connector and, with the elbow facing the 40-tooth gear, connect it to the 2-stud axle and the Technic pin on one side. Position your second 1x11.5 double angle connector in the same fashion, but connect it to the 2-stud axle and Technic pin on other side.

    • 10

Place your second 3m friction pin and connect it near the bottom of the 1x11.5 double angle connector, creating a sturdy handle.

    Loading the Gun

    • 11

Fix the triggering mechanism securely against the 40-tooth gear, holding it in place.

    • 12

Loop the rubber band around the open 3m Friction Pin at the end of the gun by the handle.

    • 13

Stretch the rubber band and fasten it onto one of the gear's teeth.

    • 14

Aim your gun and pull the trigger to release the rubber band.
