Things You'll Need
Instructions
Organize your pieces. It's time consuming, but color coding your blocks is extremely helpful when preparing to build a model, since color will affect the appearance of your final product more than anything else.
Look at existing Lego models and the Lego models posted on blogs by other builders online. If you're creating a standard type of model, like a building or a vehicle, consult existing model instructions to get the basic structure.
Decide what colors you want to use based on what you want to build and what pieces you have. If you need to fill in pieces, you can order specific types of Lego blocks online.
Start with basic blocks on your first models, and then branch out and embellish with specialty pieces or functions, like hinges, attachments and projectiles.
Experiment constantly, and play around with different types of design, some build for display and others for play. Display models don't have to be as structurally sound, but you may want to build and attach some type of display stand for the model once you have completed it.
Take notes on how you build, so that when you finish your original model you can share it with friends or post pictures and instructions online.
