How to Build a Lego Chainsaw

If you love building things with Legos, you'll love this project: building a chainsaw out of Legos (and a few other things). Your paper and broccoli will never be safe again. Read this eHow and get sawing.

Things You'll Need

  • Beer or soda can
  • Scissors or blade
  • Block of wood
  • Hammer
  • Finish nails
  • Sandpaper or grinding stone
  • Chain links
  • Pins

Instructions

  1. Saw Teeth

    • 1

Cut an aluminum beer or soda can into small, rectangular sections to create saw teeth of the Lego chainsaw. You can use a pair of scissors or the blade of a cutting knife to do this, as the metal isn't very hard.

    • 2

Punch round holes in the rectangular sections by placing each section on a block of wood and driving a finish nail (the thinner the better) through it with a hammer.

    • 3

Grind any rough edges left after punching the hole with a high-grit sandpaper or grinding stone.

    • 4

Drive a second hole in the aluminum section beneath the first using the same method. It should be about ¾ of an inch away.

    • 5

Continue driving pairs of holes for the length of the aluminum piece.

    • 6

Make five or six chainsaw teeth for your Lego chainsaw, and punch two holes about a quarter of the way up the teeth from the bottom.

    • 7

Use a knife or scissors to cut angles into the top of the saw teeth of your Lego chainsaw. You can also finish the bottom of the chainsaw teeth by cutting a portion away, leaving what looks like loops around the two holes.

    • 8

Flatten the teeth of the Lego chainsaw with a hammer so they are perfectly flat, or as flat as you can make them. You can do this by placing each of the teeth on the block of wood.

Fitting the Teeth Onto the Chain

    • 9

Work out a formula for yourself when fitting the teeth of the Lego chainsaw onto the chain. It should be about one chainsaw tooth per one pin of the chain's link. Leave two links empty and repeat.

    • 10

Secure the saw teeth of your Lego chainsaw to the chain links in this manner: one hole at the bottom of the saw tooth should be on the top of the chain link, and the second hole inside the link. Secure them in place by slipping a pin through the holes and bending them over to hold them in place.

    • 11

Loop the chain around so it forms a circle with the teeth of the Lego chainsaw facing outward. Use a pin to secure the circle.

    Putting It All Together

    • 12

Make the body and blade of the chainsaw with Legos. They can be whatever dimension you like, but large enough so that it looks in proportion with the chainsaw chain you created in the last section.

    • 13

Snap the gears in place at the bottom of the Lego chainsaw body. You will need more than one: one gear for the motor and another to power the chain.

    • 14

Fit the chain onto the chainsaw blade of the Lego chainsaw. Adding a Lego sprocket to one end of the chain can be helpful as you can use it to adjust the fit of the chain. A chainsaw chain that doesn't sag is best.
