Mad Science Dinosaur Curator Set Directions

Paleontologists often find the bones of more than one dinosaur in the same location. They must identify the bones that belong together and assemble them into a complete skeleton. Toy Quest designed the Mad Science Dinosaur Curator Set to give children the experience of sorting dinosaur bones, assembling a skeleton and then applying a skin to the dinosaur for display. The kit holds one bag containing the mixed skeleton pieces for a tyrannosaurus and a triceratops. Some adult supervision may be required when pouring the gel mixture.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the bag containing the dinosaur skeleton pieces.

    • 2

Assemble the dinosaur skeleton puzzles. The pieces of the dinosaur skeletons snap together. It may be easier to assemble both skeletons at the same time so that you know you have completed each skeleton correctly before proceeding.

    • 3

Decide which dinosaur skeleton you want to mold first and set the other one aside.

    • 4

Open the bag containing the mold corresponding to each dinosaur skeleton.

    • 5

Lay the dinosaur skeleton in half of the mold.

    • 6

Assemble the mold around the dinosaur skeleton. The mold comes with several small pieces. Each piece is stamped with a number that corresponds to a number on the mold base.

    • 7

Lay the other half of the mold on top of the skeleton and secure with the mold clips.

    • 8

Fill the cup included in the kit with warm water. The cup has two premarked lines: one labeled "Tyrannosaurus" and one labled "Triceratops." Choose the correct line for the dinosaur in the mold.

    • 9

Find the two packets of gel mix for your dinosaur and pour both of them into the cup.

    • 10

Begin stirring the gel mix within 3 minutes of adding it to the water. Continue stirring until the mixture is smooth.

    • 11

Turn the mold upside down on the work surface.

    • 12

Remove piece 13 from the bottom of the triceratops mold or piece 9 from the bottom of the tyrannosaurus mold.

    • 13

Hold the mold over a sink or trash can and pour the gel mix into the mold through the hole you opened in the previous step. Stop pouring the mix once it overfills the hole.

    • 14

Replace the piece removed before pouring the gel.

    • 15

Place the mold on a paper plate, still upside down, and place the mold into the refrigerator.

    • 16

Allow the mold to set for at least 6 hours. It is normal for the mold to leak during curing.

    • 17

Remove the mold from the refrigerator.

    • 18

Remove the clips holding the mold together.

    • 19

Grasp one side of the mold and gently lift it away from the dinosaur.

    • 20

Remove all the individual mold pieces.

    • 21

Lift the completed dinosaur from the mold.

    • 22

Set the completed dinosaur on its corresponding display stand. The dinosaur will not support its own weight if not installed on the display stand.

    • 23

Repeat for the other dinosaur skeleton.
