Making Dinosaurs for Kids

Dinosaurs are popular with toddlers, preschoolers and elementary school-aged kids. Children love the extinct reptiles because they are enormous and loud, yet they do not have to be afraid of them since they no longer exist. They allow kids to exercise imagination, indulge in fantasy, and, with dinosaur toys just the right size for small hands, they allow children control over a potentially scary monster. Create some homemade dinosaurs that will excite and entertain your child.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a stuffed animal dinosaur. Place two pieces of felt or other soft material together, back sides touching. Draw a simple dinosaur shape onto the top piece and pin the pieces together in the center of the drawing. Cut out both shapes together. Stitch the panels together around the border, leaving a small opening at the end. Fill the dino with stuffing and sew it shut. Sew on button eyes, if desired.

    • 2

Form a Tyrannosaurus rex or bronchiosaurus out of green or brown modeling clay. Roll a large oval for the body, attach thick legs to support it and compete it with a neck and head. Use a pencil to carve eyes, nostrils and a mouth. Allow the clay to harden or bake it in the oven at 120 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 20 minutes.

    • 3

Create a dinosaur hand puppet. Draw eyes and nostrils onto the bottom of the foot area of the sock (place the sock over your hand to get a better idea of where the face should be) or sew on button eyes. Cut several triangle shapes out of felt and sew or glue the dino-spikes to the back of the puppet's neck.

    • 4

Make dinosaur finger puppets. On heavy paper, draw a dinosaur that is slightly larger than your child's hands, but do not draw any legs on it (if making a T. rex, only draw its front legs). Instead, cut two finger size holes where the leg should be. Your child can place his two front fingers in the holes and walk the dinosaur. You can also print dinosaur pictures from the Internet, cut off the legs and cut holes.

    • 5

Cut the top off an egg carton. Cut the bottom in half, lengthwise, so that you have a strip of six connected "cups." Glue this, upside down, to a paper towel roll. Cut a toilet paper roll in half and glue them as legs to the paper towel roll body. Make a dinosaur face out of paper and glue it onto one end of the tube.
