How to Do Makeup for a BJD

BJDs are modern, Asian-inspired ball-jointed dolls. They can be very life-like in appearance and are often influenced by anime, resulting in makeup that is different for each doll. When the dolls are created, they are done in a way that makes them easy for the owner to customize them; wigs can be interchanged, the doll can be painted and the makeup can be removed and redone. Deciding what makeup to put on your BJD is a matter of personal taste; the beauty is that if you don't like the makeup, you can change it yet again.

Things You'll Need

  • BJD face paint OR watercolor pencils OR acrylic (not water-based) paint
  • Very fine tipped paint brushes
  • BJD eyelashes (optional)
  • Spray-on clear matte sealant
  • Sheet of paper
  • Pencil and eraser

Instructions

  1. Apply Makeup to Your BJD

    • 1

Decide what skin tone you want your BJD to have. Using the paint or watercolor pencils, apply a thin layer of the colorant to the BJD's face.

    • 2

Apply blush to your BJD. When choosing which shade, consider the outfit the doll will wear and what personality she will have.

    • 3

Decide how you want the eyes to look. How open do you want them and what shape are you striving for? Before applying the eye makeup, sketch it out on your piece of paper first if you are not confident you can do a decent job.

    • 4

Paint eyebrows on your BJD. Again, if you want to try the look before applying it to your doll, sketch it on the paper first for practice. Apply eyelashes if you want at this stage.

    • 5

Paint the lips whatever color you choose for your doll. Drawing thin, fine lines on the lips will help them look more realistic.

    • 6

Spray a layer of clear matte sealant on the doll's face. This will help keep the makeup in place and will protect your doll from the elements. Leave the doll to dry for a couple days before touching it.
