How to Make a Yarn Doll With a Styrofoam Head

Use up that unused skein of yarn to make a doll that requires no sewing. Fill the head using a Styrofoam ball to provide the doll with support and structure. Customize the yarn doll using multiple colors of yarn for a rainbow-inspired doll, or create the doll to match the person you are giving it to, such as with a particular color of eyes. Make this doll as a gift by coordinating the colors of the yarn to the holiday, such as pink for Valentine's Day or green for St. Patrick's Day.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut seven 6-inch pieces and one 2-inch piece from a skein of yarn.

    • 2

Unwind the remaining skein of yarn. Wind it along the length of your forearm using your elbow and hand to hold the yarn in a hoop shape.

    • 3

Tie one of the 6-inch pieces of yarn around the yarn where you are holding it in your hand. Remove the hoop of yarn from your forearm.

    • 4

Position a 3-inch Styrofoam ball below where you tied the string across it. Hold the yarn securely at the base of the ball as you slide the pieces of yarn around the ball. Enclose the ball with yarn so you can̵7;t see the ball. Add a rubber band beneath the ball and around the yarn to hold the ball in place.

    • 5

Divide the yarn hanging below the ball-head into four equal parts. Braid each group of yarn. Secure each of the braids with a 6-inch-long piece of yarn.

    • 6

Tie a 6-inch-long piece of yarn around the braids, 1 inch from the base of the head, to form the shoulders. Tie the remaining piece of yarn 3 inches from the shoulders around the two braided legs to give the doll hips.

    • 7

Attach two buttons for eyes on the front of the doll̵7;s head using hot glue. Position the 2-inch piece of yarn across the doll̵7;s face for a mouth. Form a smile, frown or look of indifference with the yarn and affix it using hot glue.
