How to Make Your Own Fabric for a Doll House With a Weaving Loom

Dollhouses provide many decorating opportunities that call for fabric. Rugs, blankets, curtains and tablecloths give the dollhouse an authentic feel. Purchasing fabric for these decorations is one possibility, but making it yourself is a more affordable option. Weaving fabric on a loom is a simple process requiring only basic knowledge of how a loom functions. The time needed for this project depends on the size of the fabric that you wish to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the yarn onto the weaving loom. Knot one end of the yard to the first peg on the front, left of the loom. Wrap the yarn around each of the pegs, going back and forth from the front pegs to the back pegs until all of the pegs are used. Knot the yarn around the last peg used. Cut the excess yarn with a pair of scissors.

    • 2

Load yarn around the shuttle. The shuttle is a separate piece that will be slid between the yarn on the loom to create the weave pattern. Tie the yarn to the peg inside the shuttle. Wrap the yarn around the interior spool of the shuttle. The amount of yarn needed will depend on the desired size of the fabric. Cut off excess yarn with a pair of scissors.

    • 3

Tie the end of the loose-hanging yarn from the shuttle to the front of the first length of yarn on the left side of the loom. This is the length that is tied to a peg.

    • 4

Press one of the pedals of the loom down with your foot to raise every other length of loaded yarn.

    • 5

Slide the shuttle from left to right between the raised and unraised lengths of yarn on the loom.

    • 6

Release the foot pedal by lifting your foot. This will bring all lengths of yarn on the loom to the same level.

    • 7

Press down the other foot pedal of the loom with your foot. This will raise the other half of the yarn on the loom.

    • 8

Slide the shuttle from right to left between the raised and unraised lengths of yarn on the loom.

    • 9

Release your foot from the pedal to bring all of the lengths of yarn to the same level once again.

    • 10

Repeat steps 4 through 9 until you have reached the desired size of your fabric.

    • 11

Trim off any extra yarn with a pair of scissors.
