How to Make Hair Bows for Dolls

Creating a matching bow for your child's doll is the perfect way to add new life to an old toy. No matter what the size or style of the doll, a simple bow can be fashioned from ribbon, lace or cloth to give a new look to the doll. Have the child choose from different colors or styles of fabric to help design the bow and take part in the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the fabric for the doll. If the doll is primarily used as a play piece, make sure to choose a durable fabric, not lace or silk. If the doll is used primarily for decoration, choose from a variety of fabrics including lace or silk.

    • 2

Cut the fabric length to approximately three times the width of the finished bow. Cut the fabric strip as wide as desired. The wider the strip cut, the fatter the bow will turn out.

    • 3

Tie the fabric into a simple bow tie. While holding an index finger on the center of the fabric, curl one end of the strip to the center of the strip creating a loop. Wrap the other end of the strip around the initial loop, and thread the middle of this side back through the first, creating a bow.

    • 4

Hot glue the bow in place at the center knot to prevent unraveling. Attach a band or hair clip at the bottom of the bow using the hot glue. Allow the glue to cool.

    • 5

Insert the bow into the doll's hair, and tie or clip into place.
