How to Make Doll Berets

Berets are made entirely of fabric, so they can be made in any size. Unlike straw or felt hats, only basic sewing skills are needed to make a beret. Make a large loose beret for an artist doll to wear with her smock or a small felt beret to complete a doll's school outfit. Use a fabric that stretches and does not fray, such as double knit, felt or fleece to make these small hats.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the doll's head. Use a compass to draw two circles 1/2-inch wider than the desired diameter of the hat. Draw a circle with a diameter equal to the doll's head in the center of one circle. This is the pattern for the bottom of your hat. The plain circle is the pattern for the top.

    • 2

Cut out both patterns with craft scissors, and pin them to double knit, fleece or wool felt fabric. Cut out the top and bottom of the hat.

    • 3

Place the top of the hat right side up on a table. Place the bottom of the hat right side down on top of it.

    • 4

Sew the bottom to the top by stitching 1/4 inch from the edge.

    • 5

Clip the seam allowance, which is the fabric that extends beyond the seam, every 1/4 inch around the hat. The clips should be perpendicular to the seam. Cut close to the seam but not through it.

    • 6

Turn the hat right side out.
