How to Keep Musty Smells Out of Dolls

Caring for dolls, whether they are antique collectibles or treasured toys, means keeping them clean and dry. Dolls begin to smell musty when they grow mold or mildew, which are toxic to children and damaging to the dolls and their clothes. Cleaning mold spores off dolls can be challenging, depending on the construction and materials of the doll. Keeping your dolls free of mold will spare you this trouble and will help preserve the dolls for future generations.

Instructions

    • 1

Store dolls in temperature-controlled areas. Avoid storing them in basements, attics or closets that share an exterior wall of the house. These areas are likely to fluctuate in humidity, which encourages the growth of mold spores.

    • 2

Wrap dolls in acid-free tissue paper to protect them. The tissue paper acts as a buffer between the doll and atmospheric contaminants.

    • 3

Place the wrapped dolls in cardboard boxes for storage. Do not store them in airtight containers -- moisture and fungi can be trapped inside the containers with the dolls. Use boxes or bags that allow air flow.

    • 4

Take the dolls outside periodically in the sunshine. Sunlight destroys mold spores, so leaving dolls in the sunlight eliminates any growth that may be beginning.
