How to Do Yarn Hair for a Cloth Doll

The yarn hair on a doll is made like a wig and sewn onto the doll's head. The easiest style to make is two pigtails with a center part. You can braid them or let them hang straight. The choice of yarn determines the appearance of the hair. Yarn with smooth strands will look like straight hair, yarn with loops will look curly and "eyelash-style" yarn will look wispy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut lengths of yarn twice as long as you wish the hair to be.

    • 2

Measure the doll's head from the hairline straight back to the nape of the neck.

    • 3

Draw a line this length on a sheet of paper. Place the center of the strands of yarn along the line. The strands of yarn should be so close together you cannot see the paper underneath.

    • 4

Thread your machine with thread that matches the hair color. Set the machine on a straight stitch with a short-stitch length.

    • 5

Sew through the center of the yarn strands along the line on the paper. This is a bit tricky. It helps to sew slowly and push the yarn strands together as they go under the pressure foot.

    • 6

Sew a second seam 1/16 inch from the first seam.

    • 7

Tear the paper from the hair. Hand stitch the seam in the hair from the center of the forehead at the hairline straight back to the nape of the neck.

    • 8

Gather the hair on each side into a pigtail and tie it with yarn. Sew the yarn ties to the doll's head to hold the pigtails in place.
