How to Build a Bow & Arrow for Children

Bow and arrows are a great toy and allow children to learn about one of man's first weapons. Children can learn about the Middle Ages, when bow and arrows were commonly used, while enjoying themselves in a recreational game. There are various types of bows and arrows including some of the earliest models made of yew or elm saplings. You can create your own bow and arrow for your children to have a good, yet educational, time playing knights or other types of games.

Things You'll Need

  • 3-foot cedar, apple or elm tree sapling (as straight as possible)
  • 10-inch tree branch (as straight as possible)
  • Utility knife
  • 20-inch long shoelace
  • Branch

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any leaves and small branches from the sapling and tree branch.

    • 2

Make a small hole in one end of the tree sapling, approximately 1 inch from the end. Insert the end of the shoelace through the hole, and double-knot it.

    • 3

Form a slipknot with the free end of the shoelace. Create a loop with the end of the shoelace. Leave some free lace on each side of the loop. Hold the point where the shoelace crosses, to stop the loop from coming undone.

    • 4

Pull the free lace under the loop and up through it to create a new loop. Pull the new loop until the first loop has tightened and only the new one remains.

    • 5

Attach the slipknot to the free end of the sapling. Tighten the loop around the sapling for a secure knot.

    • 6

Place the smaller tree branch into your bow. Hold the bow with one hand and pull it back to fire the smaller tree branch with the other hand.
