DIY Doll Dresses Into Fantasy Outfits

Don't keep your daughter's doll from embarking on fabulous adventures because she lacks the proper clothing. You can easily turn the plainest doll dress into a gown for a fairy ball or an outfit for a superhero. Choose sheer, sparkly fabrics and rhinestone trim to adorn a princess gown. Use bright colors and shiny fabrics to add punch to a superhero suit. A fairy will feel at home in soft colors and floral trim.

Tape measure
Tulle or satin ribbon
Needle
Thread
Sewing machine (optional)
Narrow satin ribbon (optional)
Narrow trim
Felt or applique (optional)
Butterfly wings (optional)

Instructions

  Measure the waist of the dress and multiply it by two. Cut a length of tulle this long and twice as wide as the desired length of the skirt. Tulle will make a princess skirt or fairy tutu. If you wish to make a superhero outfit, use a length of satin ribbon. The skirt will be as long as the ribbon is wide.

  Hand sew long running stitches down the center of the tulle strip or the edge of the ribbon. Pull the thread to gather the skirt to fit the waist of the dress. You will be folding a skirt made of tulle along the seam line to create the waist. You can also machine sew this seam with a straight stitch and a long stitch length.

  Sew the top of the skirt around the waist of the dress. Place the opening in the skirt at the opening in the dress. If desired, sew a narrow ribbon over the top of the skirt around the waist.

  Sew rhinestone trim around the neck of a princess dress. Use floral trim for a fairy outfit and middy braid or rickrack for a superhero costume.

  Add accessories to the outfit. Cut a symbol out of felt and glue it to the front of a superhero costume with fabric glue. You can also use an appropriate patch. Scatter sequins over the skirt of a princess dress, attaching them with glue. Sew butterfly wings from the craft store to the back of a fairy dress.
