Ideas for Drawing 1920s Paper Doll Clothes

The 1920s were times of great upheaval, both socially and in the fashion world. The youth of the country basked in post-war enthusiasm and rejected all that was reminiscent of pre-war society. In a few short years, dress waistlines went from high, corseted and unnaturally feminine to flat, unshaped and dropped well below the natural waist. The dress lengths crept up to above the ankle for the first time in history, and women cut their hair short. Paper dolls should reflect this new "flapper" style of the roaring '20s in clothes truly authentic to those unique times.
  1. Draw a Drop-Waisted Pleated Day Ensemble

    • During the 1920s, day wear could consist of a dress or a top and skirt. Either way, the silhouette was straight and drop-waisted. Draw a long sleeve top with a high, round neckline. The top should be long enough to cover the bottom. Add a geometric print or geometric seaming to the top, as art deco was highly influential in fashion. Draw a skirt with voluminous wide pleats emerging from underneath the shirt. The skirt should fall between the ankle and the knee to be authentic. Neutral colors like grey, khaki and tan were popular for day wear, and if color was used, it was toned down; think red, plum and emerald.

    Draw an Evening Dress

    • Evening dresses of the '20s were not fringed minis -- the idea of the mini for flappers was popularized by a series of 1960s movies. Draw a dress with a low tank top neckline and a flat, shapeless bodice. The waistline should be below the bottom and the skirt of the dress should be full and mid-calf length. You can draw the dress with pinups or pleats in the skirt. The 1920s dress usually had some ornate detail either at the low waist seam or at one shoulder. The detail could be a jeweled pin or a feathered brooch at the shoulder, a collection of pearls at the waist seam or a fur stole. Metallic fabrics in silver, champagne and gold were the most popular.

    Draw a Show Dress

    • The 1920s was the age of jazz and live entertainment. The bigger the star, and the bigger the venue, the more loud and sparkly the costume. Draw a dress worthy of Josephine Baker; over the top and loud. You could draw a short dress completely covered in long white feathers and embroidered with jewels and pearls. You could also draw a mid-thigh length sequin covered dress with a long train. Keep the silhouette straight and flat.

    Add Accessories

    • The '20s were big on indulgence, and consequently were big on accessories. Hats and headpieces were the biggest trend at the time. Draw a cloche hat to go with the day dress. A cloche hat was a hat worn close to the head with a short brim to echo the bob hairstyle of the '20s. Draw a headpiece for the evening dress. A headpiece would be highly decorated with jewels, pearls, feathers, faux flowers and fur. It typically bisected the forehead and wrapped around the head horizontally, with the embellishment on the side or in the center of the forehead. A clutch to match the outfit was worn for both day and night, and a cigarette holder was all the rage for nighttime fetes.
