Hair
Styling your doll's hair is the easiest and least expensive way to keep her looking good. All you need is a small wire brush, spray bottle, water, hand towel and any hair accessories (hair ties, ribbons or bows) you have around the house. Place the hand towel over your doll to keep her from getting wet. Then, as the American Girl website notes, lightly spray your dolls hair with cold water before beginning to comb out any tangles. Part your doll's hair down the middle for two cute braids or add curls by rolling damp sections of hair around small sponge curlers. Roll hair from bottom to top, leaving the curlers in overnight for the perfect ringlets.
Accessories
Add flair to your doll's style with handmade necklaces and bracelets. Measure out string or yarn to fit around your doll's wrist or neck. Then with beads found at your local craft, toy or jewelry store, create cute designs to go with any outfit. You can even make matching friendship bracelets for you and your doll!
Another easy way to dress up any doll outfit is earrings. Get your doll's ears pierced at an American Girl Salon, or buy small stick-on earrings available at toy stores or accessory shops.
Clothes
Purchasing outfits directly from American Girl stores can be expensive. Rather than making your own clothes, websites like My Doll's Life (see Resources) have outfits that fit 18-inch dolls, the size of an American Girl doll, for less. With sections like "$12 and under!" buying that new winter wardrobe from My Doll's Life could cost a lot less. Buying basics, like solid color prints and bottoms will allow you to more easily purchase outfits to match your doll.
Fashion Faux Pas
There are no fashion don'ts for dolls, but there are fashion accidents. Any styling mishap that happens with your American Girl doll is easily fixed through the American Girl doll hospital. Send her in and two to three weeks later she will be back at your home as good as new.
