Look for markings on the right side of the buttocks, for dolls produced up to 1976, to determine the date of manufacture. Do not rely on markings on the neck rims, inner side of the arms or inner thigh. These markings indicate assembly and do not reveal the date of the doll. However, in later years, beginning in 1977, look for markings on the lower back and the neck rims.
Examine the body of the Barbie. The earliest Barbies, before 1967, had waists that could not twist. In addition, look at the skin tone. The Ponytail Barbie of 1960 was the first to have flesh-colored plastic rather than a white, unnatural color. In addition, look at the Barbie's face. The earliest Barbies had painted on features.
Study the hairstyles. For example, the earliest Barbies had ponytails. In the late 70s, Superstar Barbies had lots of big, blonde hair.
