How to Identify the Age of a Barbie

Mattel, Inc. introduced the Barbie doll in 1959. Through the years, the doll has changed to suit the times. Vintage Barbie dolls appeared from 1959 to 1966. Mod Barbie dolls were produced from 1967 to 1973. Superstar Barbie was produced in 1977 and 1978, and the first black Barbie was manufactured in 1980. Collectible Barbies, such as Holiday Barbie, began in 1988. In 2001, Mattel used colors to identify the Barbie. The pink color is the least expensive, with silver, gold, platinum and black labels designated for collectible dolls. For collectors of Barbie dolls, there are different ways to identify the age of a Barbie.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for markings on the right side of the buttocks, for dolls produced up to 1976, to determine the date of manufacture. Do not rely on markings on the neck rims, inner side of the arms or inner thigh. These markings indicate assembly and do not reveal the date of the doll. However, in later years, beginning in 1977, look for markings on the lower back and the neck rims.

Examine the body of the Barbie. The earliest Barbies, before 1967, had waists that could not twist. In addition, look at the skin tone. The Ponytail Barbie of 1960 was the first to have flesh-colored plastic rather than a white, unnatural color. In addition, look at the Barbie's face. The earliest Barbies had painted on features.

Study the hairstyles. For example, the earliest Barbies had ponytails. In the late 70s, Superstar Barbies had lots of big, blonde hair.
