Familiarize yourself with the list of characters that occupied Strawberryland. There are twenty characters commonly associated with the Strawberry Shortcake doll series. Each character was named for a fruit, berry or type of food, and was paired with a pet. Check the Resources in this article for a list of the Strawberry Shortcake characters and their pets.
Smell the doll. A genuine Strawberry Shortcake doll will smell like the name of the character. Strawberry Shortcake smells like strawberries. Lemon Meringue smells like lemons. If the doll does not smell, it may not be from the original doll maker, Kenner Toy Company.
Determine what it is made out of. The Strawberry Shortcake line of dolls were made from hard plastics, soft plastics, a combination of the two and rag dolls. Determining the composition of a particular doll or pet will help pinpoint when and by whom the doll was made.
Look at the hands of the doll. If you have a Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin, Apple Dumpling or Huckleberry Pie doll with flat hands, it is a first edition doll. Each following edition of the dolls has curved hands. The Purple Pie Man is the only first edition doll with curved hands. The first edition dolls only included two pets, Tea Time Turtle and Berry Bird; both were made of hard plastic. Tea Time Turtle was eventually changed to a soft plastic animal.
Research your doll online. Sites dedicated to Strawberry Shortcake (see Resources) have photographs of the dolls, provide information on when they were released and give approximate values.
