How to Make Simple Tulle Dolls

A simple tulle doll, featuring a delicate dress and hair of tulle, can be made by anyone who knows how to sew a straight stitch. The doll's facial features can be applied with fabric pencils, found at craft stores. Tulle, similar to nylon netting but more finely woven, will not fray, and is a good choice for the doll's hair and dress. Making this doll could be a good way to introduce the skills of hand sewing to a youngster.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a simple doll shape on a sheet of computer paper, starting with a circle for the head, connecting it to an oval for the body and tubes for the arms and legs and filling the entire sheet of paper. Cut the doll shape out with the scissors for a template.

    • 2

Place the template over a folded piece of muslin and pin in place to hold. Cut around the template with the scissors, adding 1/4 inch of fabric past the template edge.

    • 3

Sew a straight stitch 1/4 inch from the edge all the way around the edges of the doll, with the right sides of the fabric together. Leave 3 inches unsewn.

    • 4

Turn the doll inside out and stuff the doll with the polyester batting. Sew up the unstitched 3-inch edge.

    • 5

Cut the yellow or brown tulle into 20 4-inch long and 1-inch wide strips for hair. Sew the strips to the top of the doll's head with small stitches.

    • 6

Cut the pink or blue tulle into a 20-inch long and 8-inch wide strip. Sew large basting stitches along one long edge. Draw up the thread to gather the tulle into a skirt. Sew the skirt to the doll below the doll arms.

    • 7

Draw eyes, a nose and a mouth on the doll face with the fabric pencil. Draw fingers and toes on the ends of the arms and legs.
