Instructions for Doll-Sized Quilts

A dollhouse bedroom will get a big dose of authenticity with a handmade doll-sized quilt on the doll bed. This is an ideal first sewing project for a young doll-lover, who will learn the basics of quilt making in miniature. Hand sewing is the preferred method for this small version of a large bed quilt. Patchwork patterning should be kept uncomplicated, as small pattern pieces will be difficult to work with and fade to the background of the finished doll quilt.

  • Ruler

Instructions

    • 1

Iron the fabrics flat. Draw a 2 1/2-inch grid on each fabric, using the ink pen and ruler. Cut through the pen lines with the scissors to create at least 36 patchwork squares.

    • 2

Thread the needle with 24 inches of thread and knot one end. Hold two squares of different patterns with the right sides together in one hand. Sew the squares together 1/4-inch from the edge with small straight stitches.

    • 3

Sew together six rows of six squares by the same method, alternating fabric patterns. Sew the rows together to complete the doll quilt top. Add additional rows for a larger quilt.

    • 4

Cut the quilt batting and cotton muslin to the exact size of the doll quilt top. Layer the muslin, batting and quilt top, right side up, on a flat surface. Insert a safety pin in the center of each quilt square to secure the three quilt layers.

    • 5

Stitch through all patchwork seams to connect the layers and remove the safety pins.

    • 6

Cut a 1-inch wide 44-inch length of muslin for a quilt binding. Sew the binding to the top edge of the quilt 1/4-inch from the edge around the entire quilt. Fold the binding 1/4-inch twice and stitch it to the back of the completed doll quilt.
