How to Make a Mantilla for an 18-Inch Doll

Dress your doll in a ruffled dress and drape a black lace mantilla over her tall hair ornament. She will be ready to dance the flamenco. Use a lace mantilla for an elegant wrap when your doll goes to the ball in her favorite gown. On Sunday you can drape her mantilla over her head for church services. You can easily transform a scrap of lace into a mantilla for a doll.

Things You'll Need

  • Scrap of lace fabric
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Tiny butterfly hair clip

Instructions

    • 1

Using tailor's chalk, trace a triangle with an 18-inch base onto the lace. The other two sides of the triangle should be roughly 10 inches long. Try to follow the design of the lace when you make the triangle. Ideally the long side should be fairly straight and the shorter sides should be scalloped.

    • 2

Thread your machine with matching thread and set it on a short zigzag stitch.

    • 3

Sew along the chalk lines you traced on the lace.

    • 4

Cut the excess lace away just beyond the edge of the stitching.

    • 5

Clip the butterfly clip into the doll's hair at the back of the crown of her head. Drape the mantilla over the clip with the center of the long edge just touching her head in front of the clip. The clip will look like the tall combs flamenco dancers wear, but will be easier to manipulate than a comb.
