How to Identify a 10-Inch Madame Alexander

The Alexander Doll Company first began manufacturing Madame Alexander dolls in 1928.

Since 1950, Madame Alexander dolls have been made of plastic. On the other hand, dolls released between the 1930s and 1940s were made of a composite material, while those made before 1930 were made of various fabrics. Furthermore, the company released a line of dolls in the likeness of famous historical figures like Jacqueline Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth II. If you're not sure if you have a Madame Alexander, there are a number of things to look for to help you identify your doll.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the doll's neck, usually along the hairline, for the Madame Alexander mark. The mark will read either "Mme Alexander," "Alexander" or "Alex." Keep in mind that not all Madame Alexander dolls are marked.

    • 2

Examine the doll's clothing for Madame Alexander markings. Some markings are sewn, embroidered or silk-screened right on the fabric.

    • 3

Cross-reference collectors' catalogs and online databases, which should offer information about the doll's size, accessories and clothing. Compare your doll to the picture that generally accompanies the description. Check out authoritative blogs like "Madame Alexander Doll Club."

Contact the Alexander Doll Company directly or bring your doll into a store or doll hospital to have an employee help you identify it.
